Offshore Oscar’s picks for September 6, 2008
By: Offshore Oscar | September 4th, 2008
It feels like we just got started and already there is no league play this weekend, but in its place the 2010 World Cup qualifiers start.
Original bankroll: 1,000 units
Current bankroll: 972 units
This week’s Offshore Oscar plays:
1 – Former Yugoslavian countries are talented and especially tough at home. Macedonia could open their campaign in Group 9 with a win against injury-riddled Scotland.
30 units on a Macedonia win at 3.00 (which is really 2 to 1, meaning when we win we’ll get our original 30 units back, plus 2 for every 1 we bet, for a total return of 90 units. If Scotland win or there is a draw we’ll get nothing.)
2 – With Italy a virtual lock to win Group 8, second place looks up for grabs. We’ll bet the draw in the Montenegro-Bulgaria match. On paper, Bulgaria is the stronger team, but Montenegro is home, and with Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov’s delayed move to ManU, he might not be match fit.
30 units on a Montenegro-Bulgaria draw at 3.10 (so a draw gets us back 93 units)
3 – Denmark is hungry after failing to qualify for World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008. They must keep pace early in Group 1, which includes Portugal and territorial rivals Sweden. They should score early and then hold the lead at Hungary.
40 units on a Denmark win for at 2.15 (so a win gets us a return of 86 units)
And by the way…
These qualifier rounds often provide some fun for sick gamblers and bridge jumpers, with some lines so lopsided that betting on either side is sheer madness. On Saturday the mighty Andorra squad (population 70,000) plays host to England in Spain. Each unit bet on Andorra would get you back 81 units if they somehow come out on top, and the same bet on England would get you back a whopping 1.02 units if the heavy favorites don’t mess about.

Oscar – interesting you pointed out the Macedonia v Scotland match as well. It one of the most interesting plays with Macedonia is going off 2/1, Scotland 11/10 on the straight win & a cover of 6/5 on the over (2.5).
What do you think of Portugal – Malta, looking like strong over at 4/9

A draw maybe, but surely not a win for Macedonia. I am completely biased, but I still can’t quite see a Scotland loss here. That might be the eternal hope of a Tartan Army boy more than anything else, and I’m just slightly smarter than to bet with my heart. Mon the Scots.

Injuries and heat could have a impact but most or betting straight win for Scotland and the book is moving. The under / over, totals haven’t changed. We’ll see how or if this changes pre-match
